Some days, I fuss over the tiniest details of my baked goods.

Other days, I tell myself it’s not that serious; I’m not on The Great British Bake Off.

Baking is supposed to be a relaxing activity, after all. Does that apply to perfectionists, too?

Maybe. It all hinges on the recipe and the occasion.

I can’t control when you get important occasions. What I can do is share five ridiculously simple yet exquisite desserts that will satisfy perfectionists!

What Makes a Recipe Perfect for a Perfectionist

There are no wrong desserts to make, especially if you’re new to the whole baking thing and still trying to figure out what works best for you.

That said, I came to realize that some recipes are less frustrating for perfectionists (either the baker or the people they’re baking for).

Here’s what to look for in a “perfect” recipe:

  • Tried-and-True: Look for classics on reputable sites run by actual bakers.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing: It’s not enough for a recipe to taste good. You want it to look great, too.
  • Mess-Free: Messy recipes might be fun for little kiddos, but they can be super frustrating for their perfectionist parents.
  • Simple: There’s no need to bite more than you can chew. Go for short ingredient lists and hassle-free prep so you can focus on the aesthetics.

With that in mind, you can see how something like a Panettone might not be a smart choice. It’ll take days and several complex steps.

You might also want to steer away from macarons. The smooth shell and uniform texture don’t come by easily.

Of course, even experienced bakers can have souffle-making fears, so you’re better off making simpler desserts—at least for now.

5 Simple but Perfect Desserts

Ready for some tried-and-true, mess-free, and exquisite baked desserts? Here are my top five picks:

1. Crispy Swiss Meringues

What recipe is so foolproof that it can make anyone feel like a pro baker?

Pastry chef Sarah Malphrus says Swiss meringues.

Yes, I know meringues are typically cooked in a water bath. But you can bake them to get them all nice and toasty.

That’s a standalone dessert right there!

2. Strawberry Crunch Poke Cake

A poke cake can look so elegant that you would never guess it’s made with cake mix and took only 15 minutes to prepare.

The secret is all in the topping: Vanilla sandwich cookie crumbs, jello powder, frosting, and fresh strawberries.

And I’m sure you can get an even layer of topping using your food processor.

3. Ganache-Iced Bundt Cake

Bundt cake might seem like a perfectionist’s nightmare. Just think of all those ridges and grooves that might rip off as you release the cake from the pan!

Well, you don’t have to let those imperfections show.

A thick layer of ganache can hide all the problematic spots without obscuring the design completely.

Bonus Point: Extra chocolate!

4. Cheesecake Bars

Cheesecake bars are way easier to make than a full cheesecake. Yet, they pack all the rich flavors and pretty looks.

If you’re worried about how smooth the cream cheese will look, opt for a strawberry-and-crumble topping.

You could also take things to the next level and cover up the filling with a second “crust” layer (actually just store-bought crescent dough).

5. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dippers

It’s easy to obsess over the uniformity when you follow a traditional chocolate chip cookie recipe.

And trust me, you can try to get all cookies in a batch to be the same size (i.e. with a scoop), but you’ll most likely still end up with a few wonky ones.

So, why not change the shape and make your life easier?

Chocolate chip cookie sticks are perfect for dipping into a glass of milk, but you can always do squares if you want something more sophisticated.

Final Thoughts

It might take time to fully “perfect” your favorite baked dessert recipe, but that’s okay. You’ll learn from your mistakes and try again!
