Making scones isn’t too hard overall. Even beginners should be able to make them because most recipes that you’ll find online aren’t all that complicated.

With that being said, you might want to find a way to make things even easier. If you have pancake mix at home, can you use that to make scones?

Would scones that are made using pancake mix turn out well? Or would this be a terrible idea?

Keep reading to find out what’s involved and what to expect.

Using Pancake Mix as a Base

Essentially, making scones using pancake mix allows you to eliminate several steps that you’d normally do when making scones. For example, you don’t have to worry about cutting the butter in.

It’s also not necessary to chill the dough. Generally, this is going to make it much simpler to make scones for most people.

However, the scones that you can make using pancake mix are a bit different from traditional scones. They’re certainly tasty, but you should temper your expectations somewhat.

They can make for an excellent snack, but they won’t be a 1:1 match for the traditional scones that you’re familiar with. Even so, it’s so easy to make these pancake mix scones that you likely won’t be able to resist.

Utilizing pancake mix as a base is somewhat brilliant. It’ll save you a lot of time and it’ll allow you to make scones even faster than usual.

You can use a complete pancake mix that only requires you to add water. The process of making these scones is rather simple.

How to Make Pancake Mix Scones

To get started, you should preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is preheating, you’ll take the time to prepare the scones.

You’ll need a medium-sized mixing bowl as well. Using the bowl, you’ll want to mix the pancake mix, sugar, and baking powder using a whisk.

Don’t use an electric mixer for this. Simply use a manual whisk to get the job done.

You do this to lighten the pancake mix up a bit. The scones are meant to be fluffy.

Now it’s time to pour in some heavy cream. Add this along with beaten eggs and vanilla.

You need to beat this mixture until it’s halfway combined. Now you add in any extras that you want to have in with the scones.

For example, you might wish to add chocolate chips. You could also add bits of fruit or other types of ingredients to give the scones a different flavor.

When you’re finished with the ingredients, you must finish mixing everything together. The batter won’t be smooth, but this is perfectly fine.

You never want to mix scone batter too much. Doing so will cause them to turn out tough and dry.

Pat the mixture down and put it in a skillet. Now cut the scone mixture into four equal pieces using a sharp knife.

You want the pieces to have roughly one inch of separation in the pan. The pan should be lined with parchment paper.

It’s fine to use a baking sheet for the scones as well. Many people are simply used to baking them in skillets.

Brush the top with heavy cream or butter. It’s your choice which ingredient you wish to use.

This adds a bit of sheen to the scones. When you’re finished, it’s time to bake them.

How Long Do the Scones Take to Bake?

Baking pancake mix scones will typically take twenty minutes. The scones should be done after baking for around twenty minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

It might be wise to check on them once they’ve been in the oven for fifteen minutes. Just take a peek to see how things are going.

You can always check to see if they’re done by using a toothpick. The toothpick will come out clean when you poke it into the middle if it’s done baking.

When everything is finished, you need to allow the scones to cool for a few minutes. Once they’ve cooled a bit, you’re free to serve them to your family and friends.

Or, you can simply eat the scones yourself. It depends on whether you feel like sharing or not.

You Can Make Icing

Of course, you can make icing for the scones if you want to. Some people prefer to put icing on them.

Making icing is as simple as mixing up a powder sugar glaze. Drizzle the glaze on the scones and they will be ready for you to enjoy.

If you don’t want to make icing, you could simply go with toppings. There are many toppings that people love putting on scones.

Some people simply put whipped cream on top. This can be delicious, but it’ll add calories to the dessert.

Likewise, melted chocolate is a great topping option. This is going to be tasty, but you might want to hold back if you’re worried about making your scones too unhealthy.

If you’re simply focused on enjoying a tasty dessert, you can add whatever you want. You might enjoy putting honey on them or you could just want to enjoy plain scones with a bit of butter.

It all comes down to what flavors you enjoy and what you want to do. Many people even put various types of fruit on top of scones.

Jam is another common topping option. Jam or jelly will taste perfect with many different types of scones.

You have the same topping options for pancake scones that you do with traditional scones. Enjoy yourself and choose wisely.

Final Thoughts

Making scones using pancake mix isn’t tough at all. You can enjoy delicious pancake mix scones without putting in too much effort.

When you make them this way, it takes some of the work out of getting them ready. You don’t have to chill the scones or cut in the butter.

It’ll save you some time, but it won’t taste exactly like traditional scones. Regardless, it’ll make a delicious snack that you can enjoy with your family.
