Choosing the right bakeware set is an important decision for anyone who regularly spends time in their kitchen. Whether you’re looking to buy a nice set of pans for yourself or an affordable set of dishes as a gift for a friend or family member, a lot of thought needs to go into the decision to make sure you make the right choice.

On the surface, it doesn’t seem like there would be much to consider when choosing a bakeware set, but once you do a little research, you’ll find that there are a multitude of options to consider.

For example, do you want nonstick pans? If so, do you care if the non stick surface is natural or if it’s a chemical coating?

What about serving your baked goods? Do you want a bakeware set that looks nice enough to present to your guests, or do you just need something that will produce a consistent, finished product?

As you can see, there are many things to consider when selecting the right bakeware set for you or your loved ones. In this buyer’s guide, we’re going to cover some of the things to look for, as well as make some recommendations on the best sets of pans in each category.

We’ve already done the research for you, so get comfortable, take your time, and let us help you pick the best bakeware set for your particular needs and situation.

For a closer look at a popular piece of bakeware that you won’t find in the sets below, take a look at our post covering the best mini-cheesecake pans.

Baking Materials

One of the first things to consider when deciding what makes something the best bakeware set for you is the material that the pans are made out of.

For the purpose of this guide, we are going to focus on four materials: metal, silicone, glass, and ceramic. Each of these materials are commonly used in bakeware, and each has its benefits and drawbacks.

Let’s begin!

Metal Bakeware

Metal Cupcake Tray

First up – metal. So, what are the benefits and drawbacks of using metal bakeware?

Well, there are several types of metal used for bakeware, such as tinned steel, aluminum, and carbon steel. Each of these metals has different properties.

For example, tinned steel conducts heat really well, but also is susceptible to rusting, if not properly dried after each use. Aluminum is great if you want something lightweight, whereas carbon steel is perfect for someone looking for something a bit more durable.

Metal pans are very commonly used and for good reason. For one, depending on the type of metal used, they can be very durable. Carbon steel pans in particular are very good at retaining their shape over extended use.

Another benefit of metal baking pans is their appearance. Metal pans tend to look sleek and shiny, typically with a silver or black surface. Certain metals, such as aluminum, are also good conductors of heat. That is one of the reasons that aluminum is used so often in the kitchen.

There are some drawbacks to consider with metal pans. For one, you don’t want to use them to store your baked goods. Depending on the type of metal used in the pan, you could end up with a metallic flavor from the acidity of the food reacting with the metal material.

This can happen with metals like aluminum, copper, and iron, as mentioned in this foodnetwork.com article about cookware and bakeware materials.

Metal pans also tend to be coated with a nonstick surface, which while generally safe, can still cause some concern. When used at extremely high temperatures, you might notice some of the non-stick coating coming off. This may happen naturally over time as well, as the coating begins to chip off.

You can get stainless steel pans without a non stick coating, but with these, you will either have to use a lot of oil when cooking, or a lot of elbow grease when cleaning.

Silicone Bakeware

Silicone Mold

Next up is silicone. Silicone bakeware has been gaining more and more popularity as of late, partially due to its appearance and affordability.

Using silicone as a baking material allows manufacturers to produce pans in all sorts of shapes and colors. While appearance is important to most people, there are other factors that should be considered.

Contrary to what many people believe, silicone bakeware is actually pretty durable. While not as rigid as metal or glass, silicone does tend to hold up well over time. At the same time, silicone is flexible, which provides its own set of benefits.

The flexibility of silicone molds provides an excellent food release. Silicone baking material is also non stick, which helps even further with the release of food. These properties also make cleanup a breeze.

Silicone bakeware can withstand a wide temperature range, going as high as 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This material also cools quickly when pulled out of the oven, which can be safer and more convenient to use.

Leftovers can be safely stored in silicone bakeware in your fridge or freezer, then warmed up in the microwave the following day. This added convenience means you don’t have to have a separate set of storage containers to store your leftovers.

While we’ve covered quite a few benefits of silicone bakeware, it does have some drawbacks. For one, although relatively durable, silicone is flexible.

This flexibility does provide some benefits, but depending on the thickness of the material, it can lead to a loss of structure over time. The flexibility can also be an issue if you’re baking foods that are liquidy in nature, putting the baker in a potentially dangerous situation.

Another concern with silicone bakeware is the safety of the material itself. When choosing a set of silicone pans, make sure the silicone is a high-quality, FDA-approved, food-grade silicone.

Most pans these days will meet these requirements, but some people still do not feel safe using silicone. Along the same lines, lower quality silicone can sometimes produce a slight odor when baking.

Again, make sure to select only high quality silicone pans, and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Glass Bakeware

Glass Casserole Dish

Next in line is glass bakeware. Glass bakeware has been a staple in kitchens for years. While they might not look as modern or interesting as silicone or metal pans, they do offer benefits that those baking materials cannot match.

One of the main benefits of glass is that it’s non toxic. Unlike silicone pans and metal pans coated with a non stick finish, you do not have to worry about the safety of glass pans when baking.

Glass is non-reactive, so it will not react with the acidity of food. For those looking to steer clear of chemicals, glass is a good option.

Glass also retains heat extremely well. This is nice, because you don’t have to worry as much about your guests getting cold food, if they’re not able to fill their plates right away. Just leave your baked goods in the glass pan, put in on a hot pad, and let your guests serve themselves at their leisure.

We just alluded to one of the other benefits of using glass bakeware, and that’s that it can be used to serve. In fact, it is common practice to serve baked goods right out of glass bakeware, because it holds heat so well. This is not something you typically see with metal pans.

Once everyone has finished eating, you can put a lid on your glass pan and place it right in the fridge. It can then be reheated at a later date. This saves you from having to use an extra set of storage containers for leftovers.

One of the drawbacks of glass pans is that they don’t heat up as quickly as other materials. As a result, you might have to bake your treats a little longer than you would with other baking materials.

Another drawback to some is the appearance. While many people like the appearance of glass bakeware, some find it a bit boring, when compared to metal or silicone.

This of course is personal preference, but is something you should consider if you’re looking to buy someone a bakeware set gift for Christmas or their birthday.

Ceramic Bakeware

Ceramic Bakeware

Last, but definitely not least, we have ceramic bakeware. Ceramic bakeware has been around for centuries and has a lot to offer a baker in the kitchen.

Like glass bakeware, ceramic might not be as appealing to the younger generation, but don’t discount it until you’ve looked at its benefits.

First, ceramic bakeware can withstand much higher heat than the other baking materials. You should be able to safely set your oven to the highest temperature with ceramic pans without having to worry.

Ceramic dishes can also be put in a refrigerator or freezer, then be reheated in a microwave or oven at a later time.

Like silicone bakeware, ceramic bakeware is non stick in nature. Unlike silicone bakeware though, ceramic is completely non-toxic and non-reactive with foods. This means that ceramic dishes have a good food release and are relatively easy to clean.

As mentioned above, ceramic bakeware is safe to use in the fridge, freezer, oven, and microwave. Like glass, food is commonly left in ceramic pans for serving, and food is left in the pans for storage. This makes these pans extremely versatile and cuts down on the need for separate serving plates and storage containers.

One drawback to ceramic bakeware is that it’s heavy. As a result, it is a little more difficult to transport ceramic dishes, either to and from the oven, or to and from a serving area, which does bring up some safety concerns. Also, if you drop a ceramic dish, it is likely to crack.

Like glass bakeware, ceramic pans can also be visually bland to some people. Again, while this is a personal preference, it is something that you should keep in mind if you are looking to buy a bakeware set as a gift for a friend or family member.

For seasoning you want an oil with a low smoke point that will quickly oxidize and carbonize from the heat. It’s the carbonization (burning) of the oil that creates the “seasoning” (non-stick) layer on top of the cast iron.

Flaxseed oil is often used for quick seasoning because it’s smoke point is 225°F/107°C. Second best is vegetable shortening with a smoke point of 360°F/182°C. Now, there’s some discrepancies as EVOO and coconut oils will vary and can be above or below the smoke point of vegetable shortening falling in the range of 325°-385°F/175-196°C. When you’re actually cooking food is when you want to use the oil with a smoke point that is well above the temperature you wish to cook at. more details: https://homeandkitchentool.com/best-material-for-baking-pans/

Hello Sarah, Thanks for sharing all this information. I've learned a lot :)

Hi EL,

I'm glad you found the information helpful!

While I couldn't find a specific temperature limit on CorningWare's website, I know their baking dishes are safe up to at least 450 F in the oven. However, make sure not to expose them to any sudden temperature changes, as that can lead to cracking.
